Start your review of Wahrheit gibt es nur zu zweien: Briefe an die Freunde. May 10, Anna Maria Ballester Bohn rated it really liked it. Such warmth, such life, such lightness and yet depth of thinking. A pure joy to read. Recommended if you want to know what real friendship and love feels like, and if you want to hear the unfiltered voice of a woman who, in my opinion, was more fundamental to the 20th century than many people know.

Comment Hmm. So gut wie nicht, glaube ich. Ich kann Susele nur zustimmen.

Meistens hat man "friends". Comment Umm, as far as I know you can only add "Freunde" on Studivz as well.
In Freundschaft - Wikipedia
Where's the difference? Comment In German you have different expressions to describe someone: "a friend" or "ein Bekannter". In general, you have many "Bekannte" everybody you know , less "gute Bekannte" which you know very well , only a few Friends and maybe a handfull of "Beste Freunde". So it seems that the German language ist far more differentiated in this case. With the consequence, that a german speaker hesitates to call everybode a friend.
Comment In English there are also degrees of friendship: casual friends, good friends, longtime friends, old friends, close friends, best friends. It's true that we do call even very casual friends friends, unlike in German. There are also degrees of acquaintanceship: a distant acquaintance, a mere acquaintance, a casual acquaintance, a business acquaintance. That is, deliberately declining to use the word 'friend' might feel a bit unfriendly -- which may be why we do use it for so many people.
Comment Agree with hm. I wouldn't say "Oh hi, Bob!
Bob, this is my acquaintance Mary. If I really didn't know her that well I might say "Bob, this is Mary - we work together" or "Bob, this is Mary from work". I probably wouldn't say "friend" unless we knew each other quite well. On Facebook it also feels a bit silly in English to call people "friends" who might actually be family members or someone you hardly know.
